What’s In Bloom Today
Careful, slowdown and take a good look while walking down the sidewalk to enter the Richards Complex, or you will miss it, Disanthus cercidifolius is in full bloom. Disanthus, native to Japan and China thrives in zones five through eight, tolerating the growing conditions of western New York of an acidic composure. A member of the Hamamelidaceae family commonly referred to as the Witch Hazels. The deep maroon to purple flowers may be difficult to observe for the beginner green thumb, however this plant will tolerate deep shade and is an understory companion of its native haunts. The specific epithet cercidifolius makes reference to its leaves which are similar to redbuds, Cercis. Always something in bloom at Draves Arboretum.
